| Description: | Isle of Muck from Sgurr of Eigg. Inverness-shire. Terraces formed by gently-dipping Tertiary lavas. Palaeogene basaltic lavas (Tertiary) of the Eigg Lava Formation overlie Jurassic Kilmaluag Limestone Formation both intruded by a later north-west trending dyke swarm. Patches of glacial till occur on the centre of the island and erratics of foreign rocks are common on the north of the island. The Small Isles lie between 10 and 15 km. from the mainland of the western Highlands which constituted the local centre of ice accumulation during the last (Late-Devensian) glaciation (26,000-13,000 BP). This ice was responsible for the widespread glaciation on the islands, this is supported by the mainland-derived erratics. |
