| Description: | North side of the Bay of Laig, Isle of Eigg. Inverness-shire. Large carbonate concretions in the Valtos Sandstone Formation (Jurassic). The carbonate concretions are believed to have formed during the late Jurassic burial of sand bodies, when calcite precipitated from meteoric-derived pore waters at a depth of 200 to 500 m. and at temperatures of 31 to 34 degrees Centigrade. Using calculations it is estimated that the metre-scale concretions would have taken several million years to form. |
