| Description: | The relationship of the pitchstone to the lavas has been a subject of controversy since the 19th century. However, it is now thought that the pitchstone flow filled an ancient river valley eroded into the underlying basaltic lavas and is floored by fluviatile conglomerate. The eastern end of the Eocene pitchstone ridge of the Sgurr of Eigg showing the unconformable relationship to the underlying Palaeogene (Tertiary) lavas of the Eigg Lava Formation and sheets of pale felsite. |
