Caption: Kinkell Ness neck, 3 km. east of St. Andrews. Fifeshire.
Description: The 'Spindle' on the right consists of a stack of basanite showing columnar jointing. Scarps of northward-dipping sandstone in the background are cut off by the neck. The volcanic neck is one of a series that pierce Carboniferous strata. It is thought that these igneous events took place during the Upper Carboniferous or early Permian and possibly all within a short space of time. A general photograph of the volcanic neck, showing curved traces of steeply-dipping centroclinal bedded tuffs and agglomerates round the stack (left of centre) consisting of similar material but standing vertically.
