Description: Channel between Fora Ness and mainland at mouth of Dales Voe at Delting. Shetland. Three tombolos known locally as 'ayres' linking the island of Fora Ness to the mainland. The headland of Lunna Ness is in the background. Ayres form across a shallow bay or across a voe, usually near its landward end partly or completely cutting off a sheet of water from the sea. They are composed of a narrow crescentic mound of shingle. Note the seaward ayre still has a channel to the sea while the one in the foreground is a complete barrier. Tombolos are a feature of a drowning coastline.
