| Description: | Ben Loyal from the north. Sutherland. On the left are the slopes of Ben Heil, the sharp peak in the middle, far distance is An Caisteal while the prominent buttress is Sgor Chaonasaid. The Ben Loyal Intrusion consists of two quartz syenites of similar chemistry but slightly different mineralogy and habit with a gradational contact between the two. The form of the intrusion is that of a sheet or laccolith, fed from the south-east, which distends and deflects the schist envelope. Three syenitic masses similar to the larger intrusions in Assynt lie around Loch Loyal and well within the Moine Nappe. They comprise Ben Loyal, Cnoc na Cuilean and Beinn Stumanadh intrusions respectively. |
