Description: Old Man of Hoy, north-west coast of Hoy. Orkney. A 137 m. sea stack composed of red sandstone of Upper Old Red Sandstone age resting on a pediment of Upper Old Red Sandstone basalt lavas. The upper surface of the lavas is a fairly even plane which shows signs of being eroded before the deposition of the overlying sandstone. It is thought that the igneous rock is from the centre of a lava flow, it shows none of the slaggy and ropy structures seen towards the top of flows.
