Description: Faulted Keuper, Rhaetic and Lower Triassic rocks, Aust Cliff, south of the Severn Bridge and taken on foreshore. Looking east. The section shows the upper part of the red Keuper Marl overlain by Tea Green Marl and the Rhaetic. The Rhaetic comprises the Westbury Beds (14 feet thick) mainly black shale with thin limestone bands and a thin bone bed at the base, and the Cotham Beds (11 feet thick) consisting of pale grey marl with some argillaceous limestone bands. Above the Cotham Beds the flaggy limestone forming the base of the Lower Lias are succeeded by weathered limestone and clay. The rocks are cut by a normal fault which has a throw of about 10 feet The Rhaetic constitutes a set of passage beds between the continental Keuper Triassic beds and the marine main Jurassic rocks above. This exposure at Aust Cliff is the best known of the classical outcrops of the Rhaetic series and is particularly well known for the Rhaetic Bone Bed. The latter contains a rich fauna of amphibians, reptiles and fishes and is regarded as a condensed deposit. Although thin, it represents a considerable period of time.
