Description: Old Man of Hoy, north-west coast of Hoy. Orkney. A sea stack, a vertical rectangular pillar of sandstone which towers to a height of 137 m. above sea level and is formed by the combined action of marine and subaerial erosion. The stack is composed of red sandstone of Upper Old Red Sandstone age, resting on a pediment of Upper Old Red Sandstone basalt lava, which rests on an eroded surface of flagstones of Middle Old Red Sandstone age.
