Description: | Stromness and the hills of Hoy from the north-east. Orkney. The hills on Hoy are formed of Upper Old Red Sandstone. The flat ground in the foreground is the Stromness Flags of Old Red Sandstone age. The rising ground to the right of Stromness and under Stromness itself is an inlier of metamorphic and granitic basement rocks of uncertain age. This represents the largest outcrop of basement on Orkney. The Stromness Flags is a sequence of gray and black thinly-bedded and in part laminated dolomitic siltstones, shales and sandstones. |
