| Description: | East shore of Inganess Bay, near Hall of Yinstay. Mainland Orkney. Storm beach or 'ayre' enclosing a salt-water lagoon or 'oyce'. A narrow crescentic mound of shingle has grown across the entrance to a bay. As in this ayre, the eastern end of ayres tends to be the highest point. They are formed by the transport of materials by eddy currents set up in bays by the flood tide. The 'oyce' is the area of water behind the ayre. An oyce can be freshwater when the ayre completely blocks the entrance. If the entrance is partially blocked the oyce may be either completely dry at low tide or may have a considerable sheet of water held up even at low tide. |
