Caption: Refolded folds near Boscastle Harbour, Cornwall.
Description: Refolded folds can be found on the neck of land between Pennally Hill and Pennally Point, 260 yd. W. 14 degrees south of the summit of Pennally Hill, Boscastle. Looking east. Isoclinal folds trending east - west and now in a steep attitude, have been deformed by zig-zag ruck folds also trending east - west, with axial planes dipping at low angles in southerly directions. An isoclinal fold closure can be seen in a sandstone band just above and to the left of the centre of the photograph. The slaty cleavage associated with the earlier fold is folded by the ruck folding and a later strain-slip cleavage is developed axial to the ruck folds. The rocks are black slates, siltstones and laminated sandstones of the Crackington Formation. Isoclinal folds are folds where the limbs have been so compressed that they have the same amount of dip, i.e. adjacent limbs are parallel. They are indicative of strong deformation. The slaty cleavage is also the result of intense deformation in fine-grained rocks. The cleavage is formed by partial recrystallization of platy minerals parallel to the axial planes of the folds.
