The cliffs are formed of the Old Red Sandstone Upper Stromness Flags, (now called Upper Caithness Flags). The westerly-dipping rocks consist of a blue-grey flaggy rhythmic sequence of fish-bed laminate-mudstone, siltstone and fine-grained sandstone. The beds show coarsening-upward lacustrine units two to ten metres thick. |
