Description: Crinan Canal at Bellanoch. Argyllshire. View of the pool in the Crinan Canal, at Bellanoch. The pool is in the foreground with the man-made wall of the canal separating it from the tidal flats at the head of Loch Crinan. The hummocky landscape consists of quartzites and epidiorites of the Loch Awe syncline, trending north-east to south-west. The canal at this point follows the line of the Crinan fault. The Loch Awe Syncline is a major structural feature in the South-west Highlands that formed during the Caledonian Orogeny and is a small part of the Grampian Highlands which is the eroded root zone of the Caledonian mountain belt which formed in late Precambrian to early Palaeozoic times.
