Caption: Recent raised beach, Widemouth Bay, Cornwall.
Description: Looking north-east, Widemouth Bay, 3 m. south of Bude. A general view of sandy raised beach deposits resting on the bevelled upper surface of yellow clay Head. The beach deposits are cemented and also honeycombed for about 1.5 feet above the contact; the impervious contact also gives rise to springs (right margin of photograph). The bevelled surface about 12 feet above high water mark at right of photograph rises gradually to the top of the cliff, about 50 feet high, to the north (left). Marine erosion and subsequent uplift are responsible for creating wave-cut platforms, those that contain beach deposits are known as raised beaches. Head is generally regarded as rock debris which has moved downhill by solifluction in periglacial conditions. Head is typically 10 feet thick in south-west England though locally it can be up to 100 feet thick.
