Caption: Flute casts on Middle Culm Sandstones, Crackington Haven, Cornwall.
Description: Looking south-south-east on the south side of Crackington Haven. The photograph shows large elongate flute casts on the sole of an upturned bed of Carboniferous Middle Culm Sandstone. The bed dips at between 20 degrees and 30 degrees to the north, and is traversed by veins of quartz. The Upper Carboniferous Crackington Formation are a sequence of shales with thin turbidite sandstones. They were laid down in a basin whose floor was periodically disturbed by currents of turbid muddy water. Such turbidity currents swept down the flanks of the basin carrying sand and even pebbles. The scouring action of such currents and the deposition of higher density sediment on soft muds produced a variety of sedimentary structures such as these upturned flute casts. Such structures are very useful to the geologist for determining if the beds are the right way up or inverted.
