Caption: Looking eastwards from the top of the Calciferous Sandstone lava escarpment of the Gargunnock Hills towards Stirling and the Ochils.
Description: The Craigforth lava scarp is itself cut off to the north by the Ochil Fault which continues eastwards into the background along the foot of the Lower Old Red Sandstone lava escarpment of the Ochil Hills. The lower ground in the middle distance on the left of Craigforth is underlain by Lower Old Red Sandstone sediments above the Ochil lavas. On the right side of the middle distance are the wooded crags formed by the Stirling sill which rises geodetically from King's Park in the south (right of photograph) to Stirling Castle (in sunlight) and to Abbey Craig at the foot of the Ochils (distinguished by the tower of the Wallace Memorial). Beyond the escarpment of the sill lies the low drift-covered ground underlain by the Upper Carboniferous rocks of the Clackmannan Syncline and in the background the Saline Hills formed of Carboniferous volcanic rocks, mainly tuffs. The flat ground west of Stirling in the middle distance is mostly covered by postglacial marine deposits of the Carse Clays. The River Forth covers this flat carse plain in an intricate series of meanders. In the foreground are the prominent trap features formed by the lavas. The wooded hill of Craigforth in shadow in the centre of the middle distance is also an escarpment of Calciferous Sandstone Measures lavas faulted up to the north on the northern side of the Abbey Craig Fault.
