Description: Beacon Hill, Charnwood Forest. Looking NE. Crags of Beacon Hill Beds. The Beacon Hill Beds are included in the Maplewell Series of the Charnian (Precambrian) of Charnwood Forest. They consist of finely-banded hornstones (silicified ashes). The crags in the foreground show this fine banding very clearly. The beds have a near vertical cleavage. The low ground in the distance is the Soar Valley, floored by Trias and alluvium. Loughborough is situated in the middle distance.
