Description: | Oakwood Hospital, Barming Heath, Maidstone. Looking N. Kentish Rag as a building stone. In this building, erected as the County Lunatic Asylum in 1833, and designed by J. Whichcord, Kentish Rag is used to good effect. The bold rusticated stonework of the piers and lower storeys of the gatehouses is in keeping with the intractable nature of the stone. Good craftsmanship is evident in the dressed stonework of the upper storeys of the gatehouses. |
