Description: | The bings are typically 30-40 m. high, flat-topped and with steep sides at the natural angle of rest. They are composed of the red burnt mudstone and siltstone fragments which are known locally as 'blaes' or 'red blaes', the waste product of the extraction of oil from the oil-shales. View looking across West Lothian plain towards Edinburgh showing oil-shale bings of West Lothian Oil-Shale Field and Arthur's Seat in far distance, in front of which lies Corstorphine Hill, a teschenite sill. |
