The top 6 ft. or so of the massive sandstone at the top of the Lower Tunbridge Wells Sand is worked here for building purposes from beneath an overburden of about 20 ft. of dark coloured soft mudstones and shales of the Lower Grinstead Clay. The sharp junction of the sandstone and the shales has been cleared in readiness for further quarrying.
