Description: Just W. of Cuckmere Haven. Looking NNW. Section through a small drift-filled dry valley cut in chalk. Present day drainage on the North and South Downs occurs almost exclusively by underground seepages, but during Pleistocene times the chalk was often frozen at depth and consequently impermeable. Surface drainage occurred and formed numerous small valleys such as that shown. These are now dry and active marine erosion has revealed the alluvial and head deposits which floor them.
