| Description: | The first record of mining in the area is that of the lead mine at Glengonnar, being worked by the monks of Newbattle in 1239. There is little doubt that lead-mining was in operation long before that time. Gold was extracted from river gravels during the reign of James IV. A general view of this mining village. It is situated on the Glengonnar Water 1.5 miles north-north-east of Wanlockhead. It is regarded as the highest village in Scotland at a height of 1250 to 1412 feet above sea level. |
