Description: | Dwarfie Stane, Hoy. Orkney Isles. The Dwarfie Stane is the only rock-cut tomb known in Scotland. Hollowed out of a large isolated block of Upper Old Red Sandstone, the tomb has two chambers, and the entrance was sealed with a block of stone. Some care was taken to keep the floor surface level. Nothing is known about the contents of the tomb. Hollowing out this tomb must have been an immense task for just a few people at a time. The marks of the stone tools they used can still be seen on the roof of the south cell. |
