Description: | Ring of Brodgar, Stenness. Orkney Isles. The Ring of Brodgar is a henge monument with two opposing entrances in the north-west and south-east quadrants, and stands on a narrow strip of land between the lochs of Stenness and Harray on mainland Orkney. There were originally sixty stones in the circle, of which only thirty-six remain, either as uprights or broken stumps. This is a closer view of the stone circle, looking south-west. It has been claimed that the Ring of Brodgar was part of a complex lunar observatory. Together with the nearby Stones of Stenness and other associated stones and burial mounds, it forms a very important ceremonial complex in Orkney. |
