Description: Ring of Brodgar, Stenness. Orkney Isles. The Ring of Brodgar is a henge monument with two opposing entrances in the north-west and south-east quadrants, and stands on a narrow strip of land which divides the lochs of Stenness and Harray. There were originally sixty stones in the circle, set near the inner edge of the ditch; of these, only thirty-six survive, either as uprights or broken stumps. This view shows the circle and surrounding ditch, as in photo. No.C03265; looking west. The Ring of Brodgar is one of the two most northerly circle-henges in the British Isles, the other being the Stones of Stenness; and these two monuments with their associated stones and burial mounds form part of an important ceremonial complex in the heart of Orkney.
