Description: | Ring of Brodgar, Stenness. Orkney Isles. The Ring of Brodgar occupies a commanding position on a narrow strip of land between the lochs of Stenness and Harray, in the heart of the Orkney mainland. This view shows several of the thirty-six stones which remain in the monument, either as uprights or as broken stumps; with the surrounding ditch. The Ring of Brodgar is unusual in that it lacks any sign of an earthen bank. It has been claimed that the Ring of Brodgar was part of a complex lunar observatory. Together with the nearby Stones of Stenness and associated stones and burial mounds, it forms a very important ceremonial complex in Orkney. |
