Caption: View of Weald and Lower Greensand escarpment from Gibbet Hill, Hindhead, Surrey.
Description: Looking east-north-east from Gibbet Hill, Hindhead over the Weald and Lower Greensand escarpment. The generally low-lying and much-wooded Weald Clay outcrop lies to the right of the picture. The slightly elevated ground in the far distance on the right-hand edge is near Horsham. The Hythe Beds escarpment leads into the picture from the left-hand edge. The prominent wooded hill in the middle distance lies south of Hascombe. In the distance beyond this and to the left is the escarpment of the Leith Hill range. In the far distance on the left-hand edge of the picture the Chalk escarpment can be faintly discerned. The Wealden district contains a number of striking and well-known pieces of scenery. The Leith Hill district includes four well-know hill: Leith Hill, Holmbury Hill, Coneyhurst Hill and Winterfold Heath. They form the highest part of the Lower Greensand outcrop on the Weald, the top of Leith Hill being 965 feet above sea level. The range is the escarpment of the Hythe Beds.
