Description: | Railway-cutting, Midland Railway, Thornhill. Looking E. Detail of Thornhill Rock. The ovoid markings in the sandstone are due to ironstone nodules which occur as pebbles scattered through the rock; these are derived from bands of nodules in Coal Measure Shales, which must therefore have been undergoing denudation at the time. The Thornhill Rock may be regarded as the filling of a 'washout' similar to the Birstall Rock, though no important coal seam is affected. |
