Caption: Howden Clough, near Birstall. Looking NW.
Description: Howden Clough, near Birstall. Looking NW. Outcrop-working in Brown Metal Coal. The hilltop in the background is formed of Emley Rock, and the gradual slope from the foreground up to the feature formed by this rock shows the absence of the Bristol Rock, which thins very rapidly from the direction of the colliery, where Bristol Rock was developed and cut out the Brown Metal Coal.
