| Description: | Spinkwell Quarry produced high quality yellow-brown, building sandstone (York Stone) from the Millstone Grit Group over a long period of time. The hard, siliceous sandstone was used extensively for building houses, churches and industrial mills in Huddersfield and other local towns. The sandstones were also exported to other parts of the United Kingdom. The importance of these building sandstone quarries is clearly evident from the size of the working faces. The sandstone was worked in benches a few metres in thickness and the stone raised by the many steam driven cranes set above the working face. Large blocks of dressed sandstone can be seen in the cutting sheds. The sandstones of the Rough Rock lie at the top of the Millstone Grit Group and are one of Englands most durable building sandstones. Block stone, paving stones and roofing slates, from the more thinly bedded or flaggy sandstones were all produced in the quarry. |
