Description: | South side of Blackford Hill. Agassiz Rock. A classic location where, in 1840, the famous Swiss geologist Louis Agassiz identified the erosive action of ice in Scotland. It is a landmark in the understanding of Scotland's glacial geology. Glaciated overhanging cliff of andesite, striated from left to right, i.e. from west to east, both sides and on hanging surface. Fluvioglacial gravels at base. The site is now designated a SSSI (a Site of Special Scientific Interest) though recent erosion and weathering have caused part of the rock to fall destroying much of the scratching. This makes this photograph a very valuable record. |
