Description: Blackford Hill, south side of Edinburgh. Midlothian. Western escarpment of Lower Devonian andesite lava flow (right), and trachyte of Blackford Hill (left). The small valley between the andesites and trachytes was used as temporary glacial overflow channel during the retreat of the ice-sheet. The channel would have drained meltwater from a glacially-dammed lake.
