Description: Cuckmere Brickworks Pit, near Berwick Station. Looking NE. Lower Greensand and Weald Clay. The head of the hammer marks the junction of these formations. The Lower Greensand is here a loamy glauconitic sand, with a thin bed of phosphatic nodules at the base; and the Weald Clay is represented by grey shale, much stained and disintegrated near its contact with the Lower Greensand. The phosphatic nodules contain casts of marine shells, in some cases, and bits of Wealden shale with casts of cyprids in others.
