Description: Lewes Cement and Lime Works, pit opposite Fox Inn, Southerham. Looking E. The Ouse at Southerham. Looking upstream. Artificial embankments left and right. In the background are the high road from Lewes to Newhaven and the quarried bluff along the west side of the Cliff Hills. The quarry in middle and right of view is Southerham Pit, in the Upper and Middle Chalk, parts of the latter indistinctly seen in the low face to right of the dark square (ivy) near the wind-pump, and at the triangular end of the bank above the stranded barge. The Snowdrop Pit (see No. A2960), in the Upper Chalk, on the left.
