Description: Crossdale Beck above junction with Hole Gill, 3 furlongs NE of Crossdale Farm. Ennerdale. Looking E. The valley of Crossdale Beck. Looking upstream. In the foreground the valley is a steep-sided rocky gorge. Beyond the fence-crossing it has smooth gentle slopes. The difference seems to be due to the fact that the front of the Lake District ice-cap lay near the fence-crossing for a long time, during which the water from a subglacial stream presumably deepened that part of the valley which lay outside the ice-cap.
