Description: | Shore at Covesea, 6.0 km. west of Lossiemouth. Morayshire. Formation of caves in false-bedded yellow Triassic sandstone. The joints and master joints form lines of weakness which are subjected to enormous destructive impact by waves. Any crack or crevice is quickly opened and extended, so loosening blocks which then collapse giving rise to caves. It has been estimated that the pressure exerted by storm waves is in the order of 9,700-30,000 kg. per square metre. |
