Description: | Cliffs E. of Black Rock, Brighton. Looking W. Black Rock from the East. Houses about 'Abergavenny Arms' in middle of view. Electric Railway Station, on sea wall, to left. Between right-hand limit of view and dark stripe rising from top of cave, the cliff is solid Chalk, in Marsupites and Offaster pilula Zones. Here the modern cliff coincides with the Pleistocene cliff contemporary with the raised beach. To left of dark stripe the Pleistocene cliff passes behind a mass of Coombe Rock, which, with the underlying raised beach, rests on a platform of Chalk, 15-20 ft. above present H.W.M. Near the Pleistocene cliff (e.g. above the cave) the bedding of the Coombe Rock is highly inclined: farther away (e.g. by the houses and lamp-post) it is nearly horizontal. The white shade of Coombe Rock above the two persons on the shore encloses the masonry of an old well. Foreshore is strewn with sandstone boulders from the cliff. |
