Description: Maviston sand-hills. Morayshire. Sand advancing and overwhelming plantation of Scotch fir (Scots pine). In the foreground - local arrest of drifting sand by tufts of bent and marram grass. When covered by the blowing sand the grass grows up through the new cover while maintaining the roots at depth to tap the moisure below. The grass is both drought- and salt-resistant. The broad belt of woodland that is being enveloped by the shifting sand-hill occupies a raised beach for a distance of 3 miles from Maviston to the farmhouse of Wellhill.
