| Description: | Maviston sand-hills. Morayshire. Sand advancing and overwhelming plantation of Scotch fir (Scots pine). The direction of sand-drift is away from observer, i.e. from west to east. The planting of 'Scotch fir 'or Scots pine to stabilize and reclaim the dunes has had a long history in the Maviston-Culbin area beginning in 1837. Afforestation eventually halted the dunes and like the trees in the picture many modern plantations have mature trees which are enclosed in sand for up to half their height. In spite of afforestation, sand continues to drift during high winds in the farmlands to the east of the coastal belts. |
