| Description: | Black Patch Hill, about 1 1/2 m. WNW of Findon. Looking N. Neolithic flint-mine. North side of the shaft (about 10 feet deep) and three of the eight radial headings of the first mine reopened by J.H. Pull, of Worthing in 1922-23. As far as possible, the original surfaces, bearing marks of antler-picks and drifts, have been preserved. The excavation is in the Actinocamax quadratus Zone of the Chalk. Flints are infrequent; the only definite course encountered is one of widely-spaced, flattish, free-flaking nodules about level with the floor of the working, along which, it will be noticed, the sides of the heading have been undercut. In two or three cases the headings connect with others driven from adjacent shafts of the Black Patch mining field. |
