Description: | Gearty Head, 8.047 km. south of Wick. Caithness. Cliffs of the Old Red Sandstone Sarclet Conglomerate Formation showing great vertical joints, the profile of the cliffs being defined by scarps due to to the dip of the rocks in an inland direction. Preferential marine erosion along the major joints forms caves and columnar buttresses. The retreat of the cliffs is slow as the intervening blocks resist removal. The rocks are alternating conglomerates and pebbly sandstones with sub-rounded clasts up to 30 cm. in diameter of granite, schist and basalts and andesites. It is thought that the rocks were deposited by braided streams in an alluvial fan environment and from the nature of the clasts there could have been nearby volcanism. |
