Description: | Near view of the Needles, from Scratchell's Bay. Looking W. Near view of the Needles. The three Needles stacks are developed along a belt of induration in the Belemnitella mucronata Zone of the Upper Chalk. The shape of the stacks is accounted for by the hardness and high dip of the chalk; the gaps between them are determined by master-joints. A fourth stack, of the same type as the others, is being sculptured out of the promontory on the right of the view. Ref: 'A short account of the geology of the Isle of Wight', p.87. |
