Description: | Cliff N. side of Luccombe Chine, Luccumbe Bay. Looking NE. Lower Greensand near Luccombe Chine. The cliff is in Sandrock and Carstone, the latter forming the highest tier, to the right of the bare oak. The broad shelf or undercliff in foreground is the outcrop of a thick clay-bed (8 ft.) in the lower half of the Sandrock Series: the same bed causes the upper shelf in Knock Cliff near Shanklin Point, shown in Nos. A1762, A1761 and A1765. The top clay-bed of the Ferruginous Sands rises from the beach in the background. In the distance is Culver Cliff (Chalk) with the foreland (raised beach) just discernible beyond and to the right of it. Ref: 'A short account of the geology of the Isle of Wight', p.41. |
