Description: Cliff S. of Shanklin Chine, from Horse Ledge, below Knock Cliff, Sandown Bay. Looking N. Lower Greensand at Horse Ledge and Knock Cliff. Part of Horse Ledge in foreground; Shanklin Point to right of the seated figure, in middle distance; Knock Cliff in background. Horse Ledge and the dark cliff on left of view consist of Ferruginous Sands, the clayey topmost member of which forms the lower shelf in Knock Cliff. The light upper part of Knock Cliff is in Sandrock, containing a clayey bed responsible for the higher shelf, well developed near the middle of the view. The lower part of Knock Cliff is streaked by numerous mud-flows, engendered by springs thrown out above the beds of clay. Ref: 'A short account of the geology of the Isle of Wight', pp.38-41.
