Description: Cliffs S. of Shanklin Chine, from Horse Ledge, below Knock Cliff, Sandown Bay. Looking NE. Lower Greensand near Shanklin Chine. The shoreward end of Horse Ledge in foreground; Shanklin Point (dark) in middle distance; Knock Cliff beyond, with mouth of Shanklin Chine (where houses commence) on right. The even top of cliff in right half of view is continued to left in a shelf formed by the clayey topmost member of the Ferruginous Sands. The upper part of Knock Cliff is in the Sandrock Series, which contains a clayey bed, forming a second shelf, about 30 ft. above the first. The thin projecting bed just above the beach at Shanklin Point marks the lower limit of the firm, dark greensand with bands of Exogyra sinuata J.Sow., which forms the back or dipward slope of Horse Ledge. The Exogyra Bands - at a higher horizon than the Exogyra Bed of views No. A1758 and A1757 - are about half-way up the cliff at the mouth of Shanklin Chine.
