Description: Stacks of Duncansby. Looking south. Caithness. Cliffs of Old Red Sandstone John o' Groats Sandstone and stacks of the same on wave-cut platform. Storm beaches occur at the foot of the cliffs. The high vertical cliffs of the John o' Groats Sandstone overlook the narrow marine-cut platform on which are located magnificent pyramidal stacks at c. 200 feet high. The sandstone is dominated by vertical master joints and very well-developed bedding, both clearly seen in the stack. The cliff scenery in Caithness is dependent on the different rock types in that area. Granite, conglomerate, sandstones and flagstones are responsible for the varied cliff scenery types.
