Description: Ewlos or Trap Brick Works (Messrs Catherall and Co), Buckley. Looking E. 800yds north-west of St. Matthews Church, Buckley. View of the middle part of the southern or main pit; shows the lower part of the quartzite and clunchy sandstones that overlie the Buckley Fireclay. A thin band of purple fireclay divides the sandstone into a thinner upper and thicker lower bed, and increases northwards, while at the same time the lower sandstone passes laterally in that direction (but outside the photograph) almost completely into purple fireclay, similar to the thin bed above and also undistinguishable from the main purple fireclay below (not seen in the photograph, because covered with talus). (Buckley Fireclay Group, at top of Middle Coal Measures.)
