| Description: | Culbin sand-hills. Morayshire. Arrest of drifting sand by plantation of Scotch fir (Scots pine) and tufts of bent (Psamma arenaria). The direction of sand-drift is obliquely from right to left, i.e. from west to east. With increasing amount of vegetation the dunes become more stabilized from the unvegetated unrestricted shifting sands in the foreground, through the first stages of stabilization, the grasses, through to the tree plantations in the distance. The first stage in stabilizing the dunes was by planting grasses, mainly marram grass. Brushwood and later thinnings from other forests were used as thatching on the dunes. This helped create a deeper blanket of still air and also provide humus as it broke down. Planting of trees followed. |
