| Description: | Culbin sand-hills. Morayshire. Arrest of drifting sand by plantation of Scotch fir (Scots pine), and tufts of bent (Psamma arenaria). The direction of sand-drift is from right to left, i.e. from west to east, the direction of the prevailing winds. Grasses help stabilize the dune by reducing the strength of the wind at ground level, creating pockets of still air, and hence reducing the amount of sand being blown. The photograph shows how the sand collects around the tufts of the grasses while in between the wind is free to scour out and transport the sand unhindered. |
